About Knud and Tonni Kittleson Family
This website is for people who come from the line of Knud and Tonni Kittleson, who came to Rock County, WI from Rollag, Buskerud, Norway in 1853. A year later, they settled in St. Ansgar, IA. They had 16 children and raised one of their grandsons, Alfred (Betsey's son).
Interesting Facts:
Their first two children, Kittil and Svend died at ages three and one, respectively, either at sea during the voyage to America or in Wisconsin. Their burial location is unknown.
Their next two children, both boys, were named after their first two boys who passed away, which was a common practice at the time.
The surviving Kittle ("Charley") was mentally disabled and was cared for by his mother, and later by his brother, Theodore.
Knud and Tonni had two sets of twins. The first set was Gertrude ("Gertie") and Gunhild ("Gunnel") born in 1863. Gunnel passed away in 1865 and Gertie lived a full life. The other twins, Lars and Theodore, were born in 1867.
Their daughter, Betsey, had a son at age 21 named Alfred. Knud and Tonni raised Alfred as their own son, though the reason why appears to have been kept within their family and not passed down, and we don't know for sure who Alfred's father was.
Knud and Tonni's son, Svend married his first cousin, Helga ("Helen"). Her mother, Gjertrud was Knud's younger sister.
Three years after Melvin's (Svend's son) wife Josie (Rogelstad) Kittelson passed away, he married her younger sister, Esther.
Because this site was created by Kim Harrison (descendant of Svend - Knud and Tonni's son), you'll also find information on this site about the John Rogelstad and Helena Torkelson family and ancestors. John was born in Hjelmeland, Rogaland, Norway and moved to America in 1883. He met his wife Helena in Iowa, her birth state. Helena's parents were from Fjelberg, Hordaland, Norway and settled in Fayette County, Iowa in 1856. John and Helena Rogelstad later settled in Wells County, ND where their daughter Josephine married Melvin Kittelson (Svend's son).
